A gift fragrance has one job: not to be returned. That rules out oud and most of the interesting shelf.

What to avoid

Oud, incense, leather and anything described as challenging. They are the most rewarding fragrances to own and the worst to receive unasked.

What works

Bright fruit with a vanilla base, or a soft gourmand. Both are broadly liked, both read as expensive, and neither commits the person to a personality.

Better than guessing

A set of four 1ml testers with a note asking them to pick one, and you send the full bottle after. It costs less and it never misses.
