How to layer two oils without ruining both

Three pairings that work, one rule that stops you wasting money.

Layering is the cheapest way to get something nobody else is wearing, and the fastest way to waste two good oils.

Layering is not mixing. One scent leads, one supports, and if both are shouting you have made a third fragrance nobody asked for.

The one rule

Pick a lead and a support. The support should share a note with the lead and sit lower: vanilla under a fruit, musk under a floral, wood under a spice.

Three pairings that work

Vanilla-almond under a tobacco amber gives depth without more sweetness. A clean musk under a loud fruit softens the opening. A sandalwood under a rose or hibiscus adds length where florals usually fail.

How to test cheaply

Do it with 1ml testers on different wrists before you commit either bottle. If you cannot tell which one is leading after ten minutes, the pairing is wrong.
