Choose weight, not sweetness

Sweet fragrances read loudest at close range and disappear fastest in a crowd. What survives is weight: oud, tobacco, resin, leather, spice.

Apply earlier than you think

Give a fragrance thirty minutes on skin before you leave. The opening is the part you do not want to arrive in, and the dry-down is what people will actually smell when they greet you.

One dab in reserve

Carry the bottle. A single dab at the back of the neck at hour four resets the whole thing without turning you into the loudest person at the table.
